Happy Days - 3 We have seen in the previous episodes how we lose time if we don’t stay close to our college of study. However, to recap, the advantages of commuting from our residence are i) we can have homely meals, ii) we’ll benefit by close parental attention, iii) it is more economical, iv) no outside interference, v) no chance for any bad social networking, vi) we can study well because of continuity in the environment. But now that we are entering a degree (professional) college, our attitude and habits have to change. We should get used to independent life, staying away from home, ready to face the world independently, and solve our problems, if any, ourselves. More than anything else, we must save daily as much time as possible to purse our academics, extra curricular activities, staying with our own age group people, community living, no more protectionism of the parents, and swim independently. That gives greater confidence and satisfaction. That freedom of staying separately and independently along with newly acquired friends comes at a price. It’s costly in absolute monetary terms. We have to understand the economics of our home and parents and accordingly we have to adjust our life styles. Every right we enjoy comes with an attendant duty we have to perform it diligently. Similarly the enormous freedom we are going to enjoy by being a hostler imposes a lot of responsibility. We must, Study better and study well as it’s our business presently, Know how to acquire new friends, live with them for the mutual benefit, Make the hostel life memorable for our posterity, Be responsible to us and to our parents, society and the Nation, Not lose the trust our parents reposed in us and Make our parents and the institution we are studying, proud. We have seen the comparative economics of staying close to our college of study and commuting from our house to the college daily. In fact it’s you who have to convince your parents with the pros and cons like the above and get their positive nod. If you analyse the issue more carefully and deep, you may be able to get more points justifying your idea. In the worst case you must bargain at least for a-six-months-stay away from home, show that you are as responsible as your parents and get their ‘happy-yes’ for the remaining period to stay as you like. Then you will be in your happy days again, as usual. A good student will be a great asset to the parents, the institute, the community and the Nation. Happy Days are Unlimited Happy days are here because of our entering into a professional college or going to pursue any good Degree of our interest in a college suiting us. This is where our obsessions with computer science and engineering or medicine or any such courses have to be viewed more practically. Similarly in case of girl students who are poised to study mechanical engineering. Other peculiar instances like not looking at aieee ranks because the students have to go out of state are also there. Some others compromise with their choice of the college/course if they are likely to get a seat very near to their home. In this context, counseling sessions conducted by educational experts, institutions of repute having collaboration with foreign universities have cleared the myths surrounding the above. They unanimously advocated the students to do their choicest courses in their choicest institutions. Renowned National News Paper ‘The Hindu’ under the banner of “Educational Plus” (please see June 15, 2009 and June 22, 2009, supplements for example) has been arranging a series of seminars, counseling sessions, one-to-one discussions in which academic experts, university administrators, senior professors, specialists in humanities, parents and above all the students at various places like warangal, vijayawada, tirupathi, on this topic of which course, where, why, and how. Most of the above reveal the following: i) girls students can easily do mechanical engineering, ii) core branches of engineering (civil, mechanical and electrical) are equally important, iii) infrastructure, library, placement chances, reputation of the college have also to be considered, iv) medical, Bio-medical, nursing, plastic surgery etc are among equals v) agriculture, environmental, rural development are also fetching. vi) Fashion, Design, Law, Journalism, Media Arts etc are no less Recently, the students in Delhi University area have gone a step ahead and gave preference to i) Commerce Honours, ii) Economics Honours, iii) Mathematics Honours, iv) English Language, v) History Honours, and vi) Political Science and Public Administration What does the above broad mixture of diverse fields of study show? It’s more important to do a course of your choice, interest, in a good college with good reputation and infrastructure. There is nothing that such and such a course land you in a plum job or vice versa. In the present globalised economy opportunities are plenty and it’s our capacity to excel in our chosen field and aligning and matching with any opening. And that’s why happy days are unlimited as this is the season of new courses, new campuses, new friends, new environments, new dresses etc. Wishing you all great future and happy campus days…
